The Golf Swing: Easy As 1, 2, 3!

Steve LaFalce, PGTAA Master Professional We’ve all heard of the K.I.S.S. Theory (Keep It Simple Stupid) and boy oh boy, does it ever apply to the golf swing. Over the years, I’ve seen the most interesting golf swings… self taught, family taught, friend taught, book or magazine taught and yes, even TV taught.

Few of these “taught” swings can hold up to everyday recreational golf and even less to competitive golf for this simple reason…most never achieved fundamental swing “foundations”.

When it comes to any basic movement the body has to perform, instruction is the key ingredient. Have you ever heard anyone speak well without having learned their A,B,C’s?

Of course not! How about playing the piano or even dancing without learning the beats or steps? Here again, the answer is no! All of these activities take time and practice. But most important, they required proper instruction.

Watch golfers at the professional or top amateur level and they all share a basic ability to make consistent contact with the ball. This doesn’t happen by chance. It happens because they’ve got all their body parts in the correct position. So the key here is to know what position to be in at each of these three important foundations which will enable you to achieve the proper result.

My philosophy when teaching the golf swing is simple…focus on the “Foundations”.

  • K.I.S.S. #1: Learn the proper Address Foundation (Posture, Grip, Alignment & Ball Position)

  • K.I.S.S. #2: Learn the proper Swing Foundation (Front Shoulder Back & Rear Knee Forward)

  • K.I.S.S. #3: Learn the proper Finish Foundation (Release The Club & “Up Onto Your Toe”)

Students of mine will tell you that they know when they’re not in the correct body positions and that’s because they know what it feels like when they are. Frankly, most golfers will never know that feeling. Mistakes in golf are a way of life for us mere mortals as we will mess up. However, understanding when the swing goes wrong and then knowing how to fix it will help you get the swing you desire…period! So I encourage you to stop by and visit with me if you’re in the neighborhood or give me a call and schedule an appointment. You come to me or I’ll come to you. My goal is to get you into the correct “Foundations” so you will enjoy the game to the fullest. And if you can’t see me, please see your local teaching professional.
