Hernando Oaks Golf Club

Print E-mail

Hernando Oaks golf courseWhen Scott Pate of Seaside Golf Development, Inc. designed the Hernando Oaks golf course just south of Brooksville, he had two immediate goals. One was to design the course to blend in naturally with the pristine setting of the Hernando County property. As Scott put it, “God did all of the hard work, we just tried not to mess it up”. Scott’s second goal was to build a course that was a playable challenge to every skill level. This he accomplished by building five sets of tees that allow for yardages ranging from 5,200 yards to 7,000 yards and varying amounts of carry over hazards. Scott also created large, fair landing and play areas and huge elevated, undulating TifEagle greens with run-off and chipping areas reminiscent of Donald Ross courses. The end result is a scenic layout that “meanders” through ancient oak and pine forests, featuring the natural elevation changes and wetland areas native to Hernando County, part of the Nature Coast of Florida. By the end of the round you have a hard time believing you are still in Florida.

Hernando OaksPerhaps the real mark of Scott’s design is that there are so many good golf holes no one “signature” hole exists. Golfers who play Hernando Oaks have a wide range of answers when asked what their favorite hole is. Many people select the beautiful par 5 18th, a real risk-reward hole with water running the full length of the left side. Others tout the difficult wooded 17th hole, a scenic par 4 gem that is arguably the most difficult hole on the course. Many yet talk of the drivable 6th hole, a 285 yard par 4 featuring many deep swales and bunkers around the green that can turn an easy birdie into a easy bogey. Two things that most everyone agrees on, though, are that Hernando Oaks has four excellent par 3’s and four of the best finishing holes found anywhere. Most people leave the course thinking they can improve next time, a mark that the course is very playable. The natural beauty only enhances the memory.

Hernando Oaks course and community,The Hernando Oaks course and community, recently selected as one of four national category finalists in Golf Inc. Magazine’s “Best New Golf Developments of 2004”, is just now closing in on the two year mark. 2005 promises to be a tremendous growth year for the community with the addition of Lennar Homes to the list of homebuilders, construction of the permanent Clubhouse and Maintenance building beginning in the second quarter and numerous other exciting improvements and additions to the development and golf course. When complete, Hernando Oaks, a gated community, will consist of 975 single-family homes and villas, two commercial town centers, a 33,000+ square foot two-story clubhouse, tennis courts, a large fitness center, pool and many other activity areas. Hernando Oaks will indeed be a “small southern town”. The Hernando Oaks golf course is currently open to the public. Treat yourself, your foursome or outing to an unforgettable round of golf. Our golf professionals, Derek Highley and Bryan Bittiker, are available to help plan and execute your golf outing, large or small, or to help improve your game with golf lessons.
